(A rookie's guide on getting pick up your first season)
Every year, the same questions come up. How do I get hired? Do I need certs? Where do I even start? This is the general roadmap I used to navigate the hiring process.
Note: Hiring changes by agency and season. Use this resource to point you in the right direction.
1. Certifications: What you actually need
To get your Red Card (FFT2 / Type 2), you eventually need:
S-130 / S-190 / L-180 / ICS-100 / ICS-700
The Pack Test: 3 miles with 45 lbs in under 45 minutes.
Do you need these before applying?
No. Most rookies get hired with zero certs and the agency trains you. But, knocking out the online stuff early makes you look prepared.

Note: S-130 includes a field portion and can't be completed fully online
2. Where and When to Apply
Hiring happens early in fire. Start applying sooner than later.
Agency | Where to Look | Hiring Window |
Federal (USFS, BLM, NPS) | Aug – Oct (Main wave) | |
State (CAL FIRE, DNR) | State Job Boards | Oct – March |
Contractors | Google "Fire Contractor" | Dec – May |
Search USAJobs for: "Forestry Aid" or "Forestry Technician" (GS/GW-3 or GS/GW-4).
3. The "Cheat Code": Call the Crews
Applying online isn't enough. You have to be a name, not just a resume.
After you apply: Call the station. Talk to leadership.
The Script: Keep it short. Tell them you applied, you’re interested, and ask about their PT standards or crew culture.
Why? Supervisors hire the guys who stay proactive and show they want to be part of their team.
4. Fitness Benchmarks
You don't need to be an elite athlete, but you can't be a liability. Train for steep hikes, heat, and 16-hour days.
The "Ready to Survive" Numbers:
1.5 Mile Run: 12:00 – 14:00
Push-ups: 25 – 35
Pull-ups: 3 – 5 strict
Plank: 1:30 – 2:00
The "Strong Rookie" Numbers:
1.5 Mile Run: 9:30 – 11:00
Push-ups: 45 – 60
Pull-ups: 8 – 12 strict
Plank: 3:00+

5. Your "Right Now" Checklist
USAJobs: Create an account and set alerts for "Forestry Technician/Forestry Aid"
Apply Widely: Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
Knock out Certs: Do the free FEMA and NWCG courses online.
Start Hiking: Get a pack and hit the hills with weight.
CALL CREWS: If you're serious about a crew you have to call them.
